Sharing your tool
An instructor adds a tool to a course from inside their LMS, through the Voshi deep linking dialog. There are two ways your tool can be there:
- The Voshi catalog lists every tool whose current version is public. Any instructor can search it and add the tool.
- A sharing code adds your tool whether or not it is in the catalog. An instructor types the code into the Voshi deep linking dialog; it names your tool and the version their course adopts. A code is the only way to add an unlisted version, and the way to add a private one to a course you teach.
Both end in the same place: a placement of one of your locations, and a course pinned to a version.
Sharing codes
The Sharing tab lists your codes. Every tool starts with one, pinned to current. New Code issues another:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pin to | What a course adopts through this code: Current (whatever the current version is when the code is used), Pilot (your pilot version), or a specific Version number. |
| Label | For your own records, to tell your codes apart. Instructors never see it. |
A code is eight characters, with no 0/O or 1/I/L to confuse, and case does not matter when it is typed. It is a selector, not a pin: a code pinned to current always resolves to the current version at the moment it is used, so a course added with it next term gets whatever is current then. A code pinned to a number always gives that version.
Reasons to issue more than one:
- A pilot code, pinned to pilot, for your own courses — the way to run a private version with real students.
- A code per audience — one for a pilot school, one for a conference — so Last used tells you which groups are actually adding the tool, and so you can turn one off without the others.
- A code for an older version, when a school needs exactly what it evaluated.
Revoke turns a code off: instructors can no longer add the tool with it. Courses that already added the tool are not affected, and the code is never reissued to anyone else. A revoked code stays in the list, struck through, with the date.
What the instructor does
In the Voshi deep linking dialog, an instructor either chooses your tool from the catalog or enters a code. Voshi then shows them your offered locations, they pick one or several, and the links are placed. If the code names a version their course may not place — a private version in a course that is not yours, a version still in review, a disabled one — the dialog says so and places nothing.
Which version a course gets
| How the tool was added | Version adopted |
|---|---|
| From the catalog | The current version |
| With a code pinned to current | The current version, at that moment |
| With a code pinned to pilot | Your pilot version (only in a course you teach) |
| With a code pinned to a number | That version |
| A course copied from one that already had the tool | The version the original course was on |
Once adopted, the course keeps its version until its instructor accepts an upgrade — see How courses adopt a version.
